Salvia microphylla ‘Peg’ is a small, perennial with fresh green coloured leaves. It grows approximately 0.7cm to 1 meter high and 0.8cm to 1 meter wide. Apart from the flowers the plant is green, including the ovate shaped leaves, the stems and branches and the calyces. This helps the pure white flowers stand out nicely during their long blooming period from late spring and summer, through to autumn. The flowers are held in whorls and have a small upper hood, while the much larger lower lip has two lobes and is curved downward. The leaves have a strong, but pleasant fragrance when crushed.
Salvia microphylla is originally from Arizona and the Mexican mountain regions. It hybridizes easily and the many cultivars share the characteristic small leaves. The term ‘microphylla’ means ‘little leaf’ so this group of plants is often called the Little Leafed Sages. They may also be called Baby Sages, which is also helpful, because they are generally compact plants.
The salvia family has over 900 members with an extensive history as culinary, medicinal and ornamental plants. Ornamental salvias have become collectors items, as gardeners try to find a place in their garden for each and every one. There are salvias that will suit every type of soil and climate. Growing Conditions
Salvia microphylla ‘Peg’ prefers to grow in full sun to part shade positions in well-drained soil. It is a relatively drought tolerant and is accepting of reasonably high levels of humidity. It is also frost tolerant plant, although many regions in the world treat this as an annual due to the very cold winters. ‘Peg’ is very long flowering, from Nov and Dec all the way through summer and into autumn in May. The plant should be pruned after flowering, but only on the sides at first. Once the side growth has regrown, the centre of the plant can be pruned. This should prevent the plant from dying from heavy pruning. This salvia does well in containers, as well as in the garden border and cottage style gardens.
