Astragalus Root

Astragalus root is a traditional qi tonic, used across Chinese and Western herbalism to support long-term immunity, energy, and resilience. Mild and sweet, it’s often simmered into broths, brewed into long infusions, or taken daily in decoctions.

  • Traditionally used to strengthen the immune system and support recovery from fatigue
  • Used in TCM to tonify Spleen and Lung Qi, aiding digestion and respiratory health
  • Gentle adaptogen that helps the body manage stress and build resilience over time
  • May support cardiovascular health, kidney function, and healthy aging
  • Mild diuretic, supports tissue healing, and promotes energy without stimulation

Decoction (traditional method): Simmer 10–30 g dried slices per litre of water for 20–45 minutes. Drink daily or store refrigerated for later use.

Overnight Infusion: Steep a handful of sliced root in boiling water overnight for a mineral-rich tonic.

Soup/Broth: Add a few slices to chicken soup or bone broth while simmering. Remove before serving.

Immune Blend: Combine with other tonic herbs like ginger, reishi, or licorice for seasonal immune support.

Rotate or take breaks: Long-term tonic use is common, but some take short breaks every few months.

Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years, astragalus is considered a foundational herb for maintaining long-term health. Our customers often use it through winter or while recovering from illness or surgery. Some even use it for pets or livestock as a tonic. Astragalus has a long tradition in soup broths, often paired with ginger and mushrooms.

Not typically used during acute illness with fever — better suited for prevention and recovery.

  • Actions: Adaptogen, immunomodulator, qi tonic, mild diuretic, cardiotonic
  • Systems: Immune, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, urinary, skin/tissue repair
  • Energetics: Slightly warming, sweet, building
  • Ayurveda: Rasayana-like; supports ojas and recovery from long-term stress or illness
  • Common pairings: Ginger, licorice, reishi, echinacea, ginseng
